3 Best Beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Last Updated on April 9, 2026 by Charlotte

Just one train stop from Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer has some of the best beaches on the Côte d’Azur. The water here is clear and blue, and the colorful houses of the village rise up the hillside in warm shades of orange and saffron.

Villefranche-sur-Mer has three beaches tucked into the crescent of the bay, each one with its own character, and all within walking distance of the train station. We ended up visiting all three, and fell a little bit in love with one of them.

The 3 Best Beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer

Compared to the busy beaches in Nice, the shoreline in Villefranche-sur-Mer feels more romantic, with sparkling blue water and yachts floating far offshore.

Here are the three best beaches to spread your towel.

Plage des Marinières

Plage des Marinières is the main beach in Villefranche-sur-Mer, and the beach that you’ll probably find first without even trying. It stretches along the curve of the bay just below the old town, close enough that you can wander down in your swimsuit, towel slung over your shoulder, and be in the water within minutes.

The shoreline here is a mix of smooth pebbles and a sandy waterline, which makes getting in and out of the water surprisingly gentle compared to the rest of the coast. There’s a lifeguard in the summer, and very few waves, which makes this stretch of sand perfect for families with young children and less confident swimmers.

During our visit in the peak of July, Plage des Marinières filled up with beachgoers, all towel-to-towel, as early as 10 am, and stayed buzzing with activity until sunset.

Practical Info

  • Facilities: Showers, public restrooms, beachfront cafés, and a small private beach club with lounger hire.
  • Lifeguard: On duty through the summer (typically June 14th through September 14th).
  • Food & drink: Several snack bars right along the beach, plus the full range of old town restaurants just a short walk away.
  • Access: Directly below town, and the Villefranche-sur-Mer train station is practically on the doorstep.
  • Parking: Parking des Marinières is right next to the beach (259 spots, €2.20/hour, parking is free November through February).
  • Best for: Easy beach days, families, sunbathing.

Plage La Darse

La Darse sits on the western edge of the bay, tucked behind the old port’s rampart walls. The water at Plage La Darse is clear and blue, and the painted rows of houses rise up behind you, and the only people around look like they’ve been coming here for years.

Most visitors hesitate to visit Plage la Darse when they hear that this beach has larger pebbles, which is a bit of a shame, because this is the beach that feels like a secret spot. Out of all the beaches we visited in Villefranche-sur-Mer, Plage la Darse was my favorite.

To find Plage la Darse, follow the quai past La Baleine Joyeuse and look for the Promenade des Professeurs. There’s a small staircase down to the beach hidden behind the ramparts, which is easy to miss, which is exactly why it stays quiet.

Practical Info

  • Facilities: One shower on the beach, and the nearest public toilets are across the street from La Baleine Joyeuse.
  • Lifeguard: None, so swim with that in mind.
  • Food & drink: La Baleine Joyeuse (my favorite!!!), La Corderie, and Ancora are all right around the port, so lunch or a post-swim drink is very easy.
  • Access: Walk around the harbour and look for the small staircase behind the ramparts on the Promenade des Professeurs.
  • Parking: There’s a parking lot on the harbor next to La Baleine Joyeuse, but it fills up early. Your next closest parking is Parking Wilson (104 spots, €2/hour, first 30 mins free).
  • Best for: Quiet swims, escaping the crowds, that local-secret feeling.

Plage de l’Ange Gardien

If you keep walking past Marinières toward Cap Ferrat, past the car park, past where most people turn around, you’ll find Plage de l’Ange Gardien, a small half-moon of beach.

This beach is more pebbles than sand, but the views back across the bay toward the old town and the citadel are especially lovely from here.

Plage de l’Ange Gardien is also one of the few doggie-friendly beaches in Villefranche-sur-Mer, so you are welcome to bring your pup.

Practical Info

  • Facilities: Public toilets are available near the train tracks, and sunbed rentals are available from Plage Casa Soleia.
  • Lifeguard: None.
  • Food & drink: Plage Casa Soleia Beach Bar, or pack snacks and water before you head down.
  • Access: Keep walking east past Marinières and the car park, and you’ll find it at the end.
  • Parking: The Parking des Marinières (€2.20/hour) is the closest option, at the far end of the lot. Limited street parking on Avenue de l’Ange Gardien is an alternative.
  • Best for: Quiet afternoons, people with doggies.
