The Best Specialty Coffee on Kauai for Espresso Lovers
Last Updated on July 9, 2026 by Charlotte
There’s a particular kind of heartbreak that only hits when you’re standing in a gorgeous hotel room, ocean breeze coming through the lanai, paradise stretching out in front of you… And the only coffee within reach is a sad little in-room Keurig pod machine. But here’s some genuinely good news for anyone else with tears in their eyes as they’re Googling “best coffee on Kauai” from a hotel room exactly like ours in an undercaffeinated haze: the island has a real specialty coffee scene with actual small-batch, roasted-on-island, properly-pulled-espresso shots.
To keep things fair, we did what we always do and ordered a cappuccino at each stop (well, mostly, but more on that later). We only made it to two roasteries during our three-day trip, but both earned their spot, and I think that two great cups beat a list of ten mediocre ones. So here’s where to find the best specialty coffee on Kauai.

Aloha Roastery: For the Coffee Purist
If you’d rank your morning cappuccino as high as other major life events, say, your wedding, or the birth of your firstborn child, Aloha Roastery should be the first stop on your trip to Kauai. Aloha Roastery was started by twin brothers, Cameron and Caleb Satterfield, who fell in love with roasting while living in Beijing and then brought that obsession home to Kauai.
Their whole operation is built around a farm-to-cup philosophy, and they roast in small batches, pulling single-origin lots from South America, Central America, and Sumatra. Around the time of writing, they had beans like an El Salvador (Apaneca) and a Panama (Chiriquí) on the shelf, with others selling out and getting swapped in.
I ordered a light roast cappuccino, and both the texture of the milk and the espresso were excellent and well balanced. I also will admit that I had really hoped to get my hands on one of those buttery and flaky croissants that are made fresh every morning, but we were too late! Anyways, if you’re looking for a solid cappuccino on Kauai that feels like it will nourish your soul, this is the place for you.
- 📍 Location: Aloha Roastery, 4-369 Kuhio Hwy, Wailua, HI 96746, open Mon–Sat, 6 a.m.–3 p.m., closed Sunday.
- About a 10-minute drive north of Lihue and the airport.
- Best for: Coffee purists, single-origin nerds, taking a bag home, espresso you savor.
- Order: A cappuccino (taste it black first), or the Hamakua mac nut latte if you lean sweeter.
Java Kai: The Cafe That Brings the Fun (and the Food)
Java Kai has been part of Kauai’s coffee scene since the ’90s, and is a trendy, all-rounder island café where you can find great coffee plus a real food and baked-goods game, plus fashionable baristas who are most certainly hipper than you. But don’t mistake “fun” for “not serious about coffee”! Java Kai roasts almost daily in their own Kapahi Jungle Roastery, and unlike Aloha’s rotating single-origins, they keep a lineup of named house blends on regular rotation: a Surfer Blend, their Single Fin Espresso (the one pulling your shots), a dark roast literally called The Darkness, a bright El Gato 50/50, and even a 100% Kauai peaberry if you want the full estate-grown island experience.
As we were very very hungry when we visited, I was pleased to find that Java Kai bakes their own pastries and bread in-house, and they do a full breakfast/lunch/smoothie menu. But what I was not expecting was that they even make their own creative syrups from scratch, like house-made ginger-hibiscus and pineapple syrups.
That from-scratch streak is exactly why this is where I went off-script. Instead of my normal cappuccino, I got the Shark Bite latte, and Travel Buddy got a Nitro Cold Brew. The Shark Bite used their homemade raspberry syrup, and somehow, it worked, SO WELL. I have been chasing the high of that syrup ever since (and no, Torani does not even compare)!
One thing you should know is that Java Kai seems to have fallen victim to its own popularity. We waited close to 15 minutes for our drinks and around 30 for our food, which was totally fine by us because we weren’t in a rush, but the shop itself is tiny, and the line snaked through every bit of spare floor space.
When our food finally came up, there was nowhere in sight to sit until, mercifully, a table opened up. If you’re on a tight schedule (or hangry), you can order ahead online to skip the line, and maybe temper your expectations on a quick in-and-out.
On the food front, Travel Buddy got the Breakfast Burrito, and I went for the Tropical Waffles. Both were good, but I think that I’d rather not wait in such a long line (again) for just a waffle.
- 📍 Location: Java Kai, 4-1384 Kuhio Hwy, Kapaʻa, HI 96746, open daily ~6 a.m.–5 p.m. (breakfast & lunch served until ~2 p.m.).
- Best for: Coffee + actual food, fun signature drinks, a slow island morning (not a quick in-and-out), anyone who got croissant-blocked elsewhere
- Order: The Shark Bite latte for fun, or a cappuccino pulled on the Single Fin Espresso.
Still On Our List for Next Time
We only had so many mornings (and so much stomach capacity), so a few well-regarded spots are still on our Kauai coffee bucket list. If you’ve got more time on the island, these come up again and again from people who take their coffee as seriously as we do, you have to check out Positive Coffee (Kapaʻa + Princeville), and Dark Horse Coffee Roasters and report back to us on how it went!
Our Credentials as Very Snobby Coffee Enthusiasts
We’re the kind of people who have a full espresso setup at home and purchase beans from small-batch artisanal roasters. We judge vacation destinations by their third-wave coffee scene. We’ve been known to plan entire walking routes around specialty cafés. We once detoured 30 minutes on foot in Spain to chase down a roastery rumor. We taste our espresso before adding milk. We’re insufferable, basically, but we’re your insufferable coffee guides with unreasonably high standards and the emotional scars to prove it.
Ready to Plan Your Trip?
If you’re planning the rest of your trip to Kauai, don’t miss the Waimea Canyon road trip, the Awaʻawapuhi Trail, and exploring the Na Pali Coast by boat! Life Update!
Long time no see! Or read? It feels like it’s been a month since I last posted for you all! And I do have a good excuse! We had been hoping to summit Mauna Loa, one of Hawaii’s largest mountains, in June, in preparation for Kilimanjaro next year. But life has a way of throwing unexpected curveballs at you, like having to pack up your life into boxes and move house on an incredibly short timeline, and so here we are! Not having summited any mountains! Anyways, I hope that we are settling into a calmer season, with more time for writing, and dreaming, and travel scheming. For those of you in Europe and on the mainland in the USA, stay cool, and it will be autumn before you know it!
Happy travels!
