Gordes | Two Incredible Photo Viewpoints You Can't Miss

Gordes might be one of Provence’s most photographed villages, and you don’t even need to battle through the tourist-packed streets to understand why it ends up on every postcard. During our visit in July, around noon, the village itself was so crowded that we could barely move on the sidewalks! Every car park was full, every restaurant had a line wrapping around the block, and I was starting to get that glazed-over feeling you get when you’ve seen your fifteenth adorable hilltop village. But then… we found the viewpoints!

At the first viewpoint, we watched a couple in their 60s gasp and go completely silent at their first glimpse of Gordes, rising from the landscape like a golden stone fortress. And suddenly, I remembered why this place stops people in their tracks. Seeing the wonder through other people’s eyes helped us feel the magic again ourselves.

If you’re short on time, patience, or just not in the mood for peak-season chaos within the village, these two lookouts have the best views of Gordes, away from the crowds. Here’s where to find two postcard views (and maybe rediscover why they became iconic in the first place).

Viewpoint #1: Point de Vue Sur la Ville de Gordes

This is the classic Gordes viewpoint (search ‘Point de Vue Sur la Ville de Gordes’ in Google Maps), the one that’s launched a thousand Instagram posts and graced countless guidebook covers. It’s essentially a roadside pull-off with “arrêt minute” (quick-stop) parking, designed for people to hop out, capture the shot, and move along.

From this angle, Gordes unfolds before you like something out of a medieval dream with honey-colored stone houses cascading down the hillside. In the town, church towers punctuate the skyline, all of it glowing against the endless Luberon landscape. It’s the view that made this village famous, and standing here, you totally get why.

Parking note: The “arrêt minute” setup means this isn’t a place to park for the full day. Be quick, be courteous, and don’t block traffic while you soak in your picture-perfect Provence moment.

Viewpoint #2: Quiet Roadside Panorama

Our second favorite spot (GPS: 43.905476, 5.200671) is this simple roadside pull-off that has a slightly different angle on Gordes, and depending on your timing, it can feel refreshingly calm compared to the main viewpoint.

While the iconic lookout is all about that quick “wow” moment, this spot lets you take your time. You can walk around a bit, try different photo angles, maybe even just sit for a minute and watch how the light shifts across those ancient stone walls.

The perspective here shows off Gordes’ dramatic perch in a different way, and you really get a sense of how the village seems to grow right out of the rocky hillside, like it’s been part of the landscape forever. It’s especially gorgeous if you catch it during golden hour, when the whole village glows like it’s lit from within.

Best Times to Visit These Viewpoints

For the prettiest light (and the most magical experience), aim for early morning or late afternoon when the view of Gordes transforms from beautiful to absolutely ethereal. In golden light, the stone practically glows, and the shadows are softer. Midday can be harsh for photos and tends to wash out the gorgeous honey color of the buildings.

Plus, summer midday is when tour buses arrive, and the viewpoints get their busiest. Visiting in the early morning (before 8 am) gives you the best chance of having one of those perfect, peaceful moments where it feels like you have all of Provence to yourself.

Is Gordes Worth It If You Only Do The Viewpoints?

Absolutely. These viewpoints alone are spectacular, and they give you all the magic of Gordes without needing to navigate the village or pay your firstborn child in parking fees. From these overlooks, Gordes gets to be everything it was meant to be: timeless and downright magical.

Down in the crowded streets of the town center, Gordes can lose some of that magic under the weight of its own popularity. If you want to explore the village after visiting the viewpoints, I recommend going very early or later in the day, when the tour groups have thinned out and the streets are a little more manageable.
