Cloud Catcher: A Chairlift Ride Up Monte Solaro
Last Updated on August 12, 2025 by Charlotte
The Monte Solaro Chairlift in Anacapri is one of the easiest and most scenic ways to reach Capri’s highest point. In just 13 minutes, you’ll glide over terraced gardens and lemon groves before stepping out to sweeping views of the Faraglioni, the Bay of Naples, and even Mount Vesuvius on a clear day. In this guide, I’ll share exactly how to ride the chairlift, ticket prices, how to get there from Capri Town, and a few tips from my own visit to make the most of your visit.

Floating Above Capri: My Chairlift Ride to Monte Solaro
I’m on a chairlift cruising above the slopes of Anacapri, toward the summit of Monte Solaro. Monte Solaro is the highest point on the island of Capri, with spectacular views of the island and the Bay of Naples. My feet dangle below me, my flip flops a second away from falling onto some poor person’s roof, and I clutch my purse to my body, hoping that clumsy me won’t drop that either.
It’s a mercurial day, with the sky alternating between clouds and sun, as if the island can’t agree on the weather. Capri has been in an out-of-season heat wave for the past few days. But where the marina and beaches are blazing hot, the temperature above the slopes of Monte Solaro is much more pleasant and cool.
Along the thirteen-minute long ride, we pass over orchards with fruiting cherry trees, terraces with ancient olive groves, and vegetable gardens. It feels like we can see all the way across the ocean, beyond the horizon from up here.
The ride itself is short, and we find ourselves at the summit. Some helpful kitties supervise the lift attendants, and we all disembark safely.
At the summit, there is a restaurant, toilets, and viewing platforms with 360-degree views of the island. We pass by the iconic statue of Emperor Augustus, with the Faraglioni framed in the background.
People flock to Monte Solaro for the view, but it is normal for frequent clouds and mist to roll through. Funnily enough, some locals in Capri call Monte Solaro “Acchiappanuvole“, which means cloud catcher.
After exploring the summit, we settle into a table at the Monte Solaro bar, to enjoy apertivo, a pre-meal drink that comes with some complimentary chips while we wait for the next round of clouds to pass.
Surely enough, the clouds do pass, and we are rewarded with the most amazing view. I think that this reflects a lot of experiences in life. This too will pass, and everything is temporary. So make the most of it, and enjoy the good times, good food, good people, and good views as they are.

Facilities and Accessibility
Bistro and Restaurant
There is a bistro, restaurant, and bar at the Monte Solaro summit. You can view the menus here. While the prices are a little high, I think this is to be expected because the staff have to port all the food and drinks to the top of the mountain.
One added bonus of visiting the restaurant or bistro with table service, is that toilet tokens and wifi are included for only 1 €.
Toilets
There are paid public toilets available at the summit, for a 2 € fee.
Accessibility
I would not consider the Monte Solaro chairlift to be a good fit for those with very young children, or those with impaired mobility. Each chair on the lift is a single-seater, and children under 8 years are permitted to sit on the parent’s lap. Older children will be seated separately from you. For every person, boarding the chairlift requires the leg strength to sit back into the moving chair as it scoops you up, and similarly, you have to be able to stand up and walk away to disembark.
Was it worth the trip?
100% Yes! This was one of my more memorable afternoons on Capri.
