Last Updated on March 10, 2026 by Charlotte
Dreaming of eloping in the Alps? Whether you’re considering a symbolic ceremony in the shadow of Mont Blanc or looking for ideas on how to plan a wedding that feels intimate, adventurous, and authentically you, this guide is for you. In June 2025, my partner and I eloped in Chamonix, France, and it was everything we hoped for and more. From local vendor coordination and location scouting to transporting our wedding outfits from Hawaii, we learned a lot in the process. In this post, I’m sharing all the details that made our day possible: logistics, lessons learned, planning timelines, and why we chose Chamonix over the Dolomites, Switzerland, or even our home in Hawaii.
Whether you’re deep into elopement planning or just here to daydream, you’re welcome here.
Dear Readers,
I have a big surprise to share! I went to France with a Travel Buddy, and came home with a Travel Husband! Yes! We eloped in the Alps! If you’ve been following along on our adventures for a while, you will know that the Alps hold a special place in our hearts. We were lucky to be supported by a fantastic local team, who went above and beyond to make our dream elopement possible. In this blog post, we’ll share all the findings of all of our research and planning that went into making our dream elopement come to life, so that you too can have a once-in-a-lifetime elopement in the Alps. Or if you are already happily married, just enjoy these photos.

Why Chamonix is the Perfect Destination for Your Mountain Elopement
When we started dreaming about our mountain elopement, we had a long list of “must-haves” and an equally long list of concerns. We wanted stunning Alpine scenery, but we also needed practical logistics to work seamlessly. We craved adventure, but we didn’t want to sacrifice comfort or accessibility. After researching destinations across the Alps, Chamonix emerged as the clear winner, and here’s exactly why it might be perfect for your elopement too.
International Accessibility to Chamonix
As someone traveling to France internationally, it was important to us that there was an international airport within an hour of our elopement spot. Because our home in Hawaii is a 26-hour journey away from Europe, the last thing we wanted was a long train or car journey after finally landing on the continent.
Conveniently, Geneva International Airport (GVA) is only a little over an hour drive from Chamonix, and there are numerous intercontinental flights to Switzerland from Vancouver and San Francisco, which made the journey to Switzerland from Hawaii fairly easy for us, with minimal connecting flights. When you’re already exhausted from international travel, the last thing you want is complicated ground transportation. Geneva’s accessibility meant we could land, grab our transfer from Mountain Dropoffs, and be relaxing in our apartment with Mont Blanc views within two hours of touching down.
Multiple Stunning Locations Without the Travel Hassle
Because we wanted to do an outdoor ceremony for our elopement, the ease of access to beautiful scenery was crucial. While we were okay with a little bit of hiking, I personally did not want to have to make a long train or car journey just to begin our adventure. I also knew that I wanted more than one photo location and a picnic lunch after the ceremony. It was here that Chamonix really shined!
Getting Around in Chamonix is Easy
Chamonix is accessible by car, bus, and train, whereas somewhere like Zermatt or Wengen is car-free. We booked our accommodations near the Brevent lift, so it was an easy 5-minute drive for our lovely photographer Mathilde to ferry us to our symbolic ceremony location at Les Gaillands, a quick romp across the street to explore the ruins of a chapel, and then another quick 3-minute drive to get to the Brevent lift where we soared up the cable car to have a picnic on Planpraz.
In the span of a few hours, we experienced intimate forest ceremony vibes, explored historical ruins, and celebrated with a mountaintop picnic—all without any stressful logistics or long travel times between locations. This kind of scenic diversity in such a compact area is genuinely rare in the Alps.
Luxury Experience Without the Luxury Price Tag
Originally, we were considering the Swiss Alps, the Dolomites, or Tuscany for our elopement. But after searching endlessly for elopement packages in Switzerland, we couldn’t find a team that fit both our vision of what we wanted our big day to look like and our budget. Enter Chamonix!
The French Alps Advantage
In comparison to Switzerland, accommodations, lift tickets, and even meals were much more affordable. We knew that we wanted to make a “wedding week” out of our time in the Alps, to give us an opportunity to recover from jet lag and to enjoy hiking and adventuring the week of our wedding. During our wedding week in Chamonix, we got to do so many fun things including visit the Aiguille du Midi, the highest mountain in Western Europe, go inside a real glacier at the Mer de Glace, hike to alpine lakes at Lac Blanc and Lac Bleu, and even ride the luge. Even better, the Brevent lift that we rode up to our picnic (in full wedding attire) was also completely covered by our Mont Blanc Summer MultiPass.
For us, the deciding factor in choosing Chamonix for our elopement was a budget reality. We’re talking about the difference between feeling financially stressed about every decision in Switzerland versus being able to truly enjoy and extend our celebration. In Chamonix, we could afford to stay longer, eat amazing meals, and experience more of the region without constantly worrying about costs.
Pro tip: The Mont Blanc MultiPass is an absolute game-changer if you’re staying for more than a few days. It covers lifts, buses, and trains throughout the valley, making it easy to explore different areas for both your elopement and your extended honeymoon adventures. You can read more about why you should consider the Mont Blanc Multipass here.
Real Local Vendors, Not Just Tourist Services
It also felt important to us that our wedding vendors were local or lived relatively close to our elopement spot. Whereas many cute towns in the Jungfrau region seem to be predominantly tourists over residents, Chamonix actually has wedding vendors that live and work in the valley. This made it extremely easy to coordinate pre-elopement activities like makeup and hair trials, and visits to the florist. Moreover, the local vendors who call Chamonix home know the area intimately: they are experts in knowing the best light at different times of day, which trails are most accessible, the best spots to get a croissant, and how to make the logistics of your special day work seamlessly. Plus, there’s something sweet about being welcomed into a community rather than just being another tourist transaction.
Communication Without Language Barriers
Much to our surprise, we found that many of the wedding vendors in Chamonix speak English! This was another one of the primary deciding factors in choosing Chamonix over the Dolomites or Tuscany. While I would have been happy to make communications work using Google Translate, there was genuine relief in being able to properly communicate our needs and wants with everything related to our elopement. While I had studied French in high school, I quickly realized that my language skills would not have sufficiently prepared me for communicating about things like hairstyles, makeup looks, and floral arrangements. These are nuanced conversations where you really want to be understood!
When planning an elopement, strong communication matters more than you think! Planning an elopement involves so many detailed, personal conversations about your vision. Being able to express exactly what you’re dreaming of, and understanding all the options your vendors are suggesting makes the entire planning process more enjoyable and less stressful. When language isn’t a barrier, you can focus on the creative and emotional aspects of planning rather than worrying about miscommunication on your wedding day.
Looking back, Chamonix checked every single box on our wishlist while solving problems we didn’t even know we’d have. It offered us the perfect blend of accessibility and adventure, affordability and luxury, international appeal and local charm. If you’re considering the Alps for your elopement, I can’t recommend Chamonix highly enough—it truly is a destination that delivers on every promise.
The Dream Team Behind the Magic
Here’s something I learned that completely changed how I approached vendor selection: the magic happens when your vendors already know and love working with each other. Instead of managing a group of strangers trying to figure out each other’s workflows on your wedding day, imagine having a team that operates like old friends who’ve perfected their collaborative rhythm.
One of my top priorities was finding wedding vendors who had worked together previously and genuinely enjoyed each other’s company. As we all know, getting ready as a bride can often take longer than expected, leading to delayed timelines and unnecessary stress. But when you hire vendors who understand each other’s working styles and have realistic time estimates for each stage of getting ready, that stress just melts away. As a result, our day flowed seamlessly from one beautiful moment to the next, and the energy between our vendors was so warm and supportive that it made everything feel like a celebration with dear friends rather than a business transaction.
Now let me introduce you to the fantastic women who made our day absolutely magical!
Mathilde Rietch Photography: Alps Elopement Photographer
Mathilde is a Lausanne-based portrait and elopement photographer who blends a deep love of landscapes with an intuitive feel for human connection. Originally trained in portraiture, she brings a rare sensitivity to her work, helping her subjects feel seen, safe, and completely at ease in front of her lens. Her background in landscape photography under the pseudonym Frihead shines through in every frame, especially during mountaintop elopements and outdoor ceremonies that embrace nature’s wild, ephemeral beauty.
When she’s not photographing couples in love, you’ll find her chasing golden light across the Alps, sipping cappuccinos, treasure-hunting at flea markets, or losing herself in melancholic music and mountain sunrises. She travels all across Switzerland and France for elopements and intimate weddings.
Why We Chose Mathilde: A True Creative Partner
We were drawn to Mathilde for her poetic eye, and working with her felt like hiking with a dear friend who just happens to be taking the best photos of your life. What sets Mathilde apart is how she approaches each elopement as a unique story to be told. During our planning calls, she didn’t just ask about timeline and locations, she truly wanted to understand what moments mattered most to us, what made us laugh together, and how we envisioned feeling on our wedding day. This thoughtful approach showed up in every single photo.

Specializing in bridal and commercial work, Laura brings a deep knowledge of both beauty trends and the practical realities of outdoor events. She’s the rare artist who can touch up your makeup at the top of a hike during an adventure elopement, then pivot to flawless application for formal wedding parties and commercial shoots. Her experience spans sport, fashion, and creative editorial work, but she truly shines when working with adventurous couples.
Why We Chose Laura: A MUA WHO GoES Above and Beyond for Her Brides
We were incredibly lucky to have Laura not just as our makeup artist, but also as our celebrant and day-of support crew. Not only did she craft an incredible makeup look that stayed fresh the whole day, but she also guided us through our ceremony with grace, captured behind-the-scenes content that we absolutely treasure, and helped us to feel grounded and cared for throughout the day. Having someone who could seamlessly shift between roles meant we never felt like we were missing anything because every moment was covered with such care and attention.
The Laura difference: She doesn’t just make you look beautiful; she makes you feel completely supported and celebrated every step of the way.

They became our cheerleaders, our problem-solvers, and our friends for the day. That’s the kind of support every couple deserves on their wedding day.
Chamonix Elopement Logistics + Planning Timeline
Planning an international elopement might sound overwhelming, but I promise it’s more manageable than you think! Here’s exactly how we tackled the logistics for our Chamonix elopement, including our timeline, what worked well, and what we’d do differently. Consider this your step-by-step roadmap for making your own Alps elopement dreams come true.
Our Vendor Booking Timeline
I started reaching out to photographers in November 2024 for a June 2025 elopement. Here’s where flexibility really paid off: we actually discovered Mathilde when we were initially planning to elope in Zermatt! However, after researching accommodations and transport costs in Switzerland, we realized our budget would stretch much further in Chamonix, and that we’d get the same stunning Alpine scenery.
Sometimes the best discoveries come from being willing to pivot when your original plan doesn’t align with your budget!
We confirmed our date with Mathilde in December, and then I reserved Evie for hair and Laura for makeup in late December/early January. The florals were one of the last things that I arranged, and this was reserved in early March. This timeline worked well because starting with photography first gave us a solid foundation. Once we had our date locked in with Mathilde, everything else fell into place more easily.
Pro tip: Book your photographer first, especially if you’re planning for peak season (June-September in the Alps). The best elopement photographers can get booked up quickly, and they often have the best recommendations for other local vendors.
Booking our Chamonix Accommodations and Transportation
I booked our flights to Geneva in January, a few days after putting down our deposit with Mathilde. I then found and booked our Chamonix holiday apartment. Originally, we were hoping to stay at the Albert 1er Hotel in Chamonix-Centre, but the suite type that I was interested in booked out, and we thought that a hotel room would be too cramped to get ready in when you consider a whole hair and makeup setup.
In the end, I was very pleased with our apartment because it had a full view of Mont Blanc. Imagine getting ready for your wedding with that as your backdrop! If you’re planning your Chamonix elopement and not sure of where to stay, you can read our guide on where to stay in the Chamonix valley here.
Lesson learned: Don’t underestimate how much space you’ll need for getting ready! A hotel room might seem romantic, but when you have hair, makeup, photography equipment, and wedding attire all happening in one space, you’ll be grateful for the extra room an apartment provides.
Getting Around: The Mont Blanc Multipass Game-Changer
Because we stayed in Chamonix a full week, we purchased the Mont Blanc Multipass to get around, which covered all lifts, buses, and trains during our stay. This was honestly one of the best decisions we made – not only did it save us money, but it gave us the freedom to explore different areas without worrying about individual ticket costs.
Purchasing Our Wedding Outfits
One aspect to think through thoroughly for your own adventure elopement is the outfits! Do you plan to do any hiking? Do you plan to do any adventure sports in your wedding gown? Being outside in the Alps means that there is a real chance that you “trash the dress.” For us personally, this meant that we did not want to invest thousands into outfits which might not make it back home with us.
Budget-Friendly Solutions That Look Amazing
After a few hours of internet sleuthing, I found a secondhand Martina Liana gown on Poshmark that I immediately fell in love with. Next, after some failed department store visits, I custom ordered Travel Buddy’s tuxedo suit from Sara Wan, a tailor in Shanghai, for only $150 USD. For our shoes, Travel Buddy found a decent pair of dress shoes at Nordstrom Rack, and I ended up wearing my Brooks Cascadia 17 trail runners when I wasn’t skipping around barefoot.
The beauty of this approach was that we looked absolutely stunning in our photos, but we never had to worry about mud, grass stains, or snags. It gave us the freedom to truly embrace every adventurous moment of our day without stress about protecting expensive garments.
Money-saving tip: Don’t sleep on secondhand wedding dresses! Many are worn only once and are in perfect condition. Plus, if something happens to it during your adventure elopement, you won’t feel devastated about the financial loss.
Transporting the Wedding Outfits to and from Chamonix
Because we didn’t want our luggage (and our wedding outfits) to be lost, we carried on the wedding gown in a space bag in my Osprey Fairview 40L backpack, and Travel Buddy carried his tux in his Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Del Dia backpack. This was surprisingly easy, and we got to Geneva airport with no issue. From Geneva airport, we took a Mountain Dropoffs transfer directly to the front door of our apartment, no hassle with rental cars or navigating public transport while jet-lagged and carrying wedding attire.
Practical tip: Space bags are your best friend for compressing a wedding dress into a backpack! Just make sure to try the packing process at home first to ensure everything fits and you’re comfortable with the weight.
After the elopement, we decided to ship my wedding gown home in a flat-rate box from the La Poste office in Chamonix Centre. The shipping process was surprisingly easy, and my dress arrived home in Hawaii safe and sound. This worked perfectly because carrying on our wedding attire gave us complete peace of mind during travel, and shipping the dress home afterward meant we didn’t have to worry about packing a potentially dirty or damaged gown for the return flight.
The logistics might seem like a lot when you’re in the planning phase, but I promise that breaking it down into these manageable steps makes the whole process feel much less overwhelming. Plus, there’s something so exciting about each booking confirmation – every step brings you closer to your dream elopement in the Alps!
Why Should You Elope? Elopements are as Wild as You Can Dream
If you’re on the fence about eloping, wondering if it’s “enough” or worried about what you might be missing, let me share why our Alps elopement was absolutely everything we dreamed of and more. Spoiler alert: we didn’t miss out on anything – we gained so much more than we could have imagined!
When Traditional Weddings Don’t Fit Your Vision
Travel Buddy and I have very geographically scattered families across the country. The thought of having to choose one side over the other and potentially exclude loved ones felt impossible. We wanted everyone to feel included, but we also knew that our dream wedding vision simply wasn’t possible within our budget for a formal celebration or even an elopement in Hawaii. However, it was absolutely achievable in France! Sometimes the path that seems unconventional actually leads to the most perfect solution for your unique situation.
The Alps: Where Our Love Story Began
The Alps hold a special place in our hearts since Travel Buddy proposed at Oeschinensee. I have to laugh because I was so excited during the proposal that I literally blacked out and don’t remember anything he said! But what I do remember are the forget-me-nots surrounding us in that magical moment.
When we returned to Chamonix for our wedding, seeing those same flowers everywhere felt like the mountains were welcoming us back. I took SO many photos of them – and I love the sweet irony that I will definitely not forget my Travel Buddy! Our florist even put in a special order to include flowers that looked like forget-me-nots in my bouquet when I shared this story with her.
Choosing a location that already holds meaning in your love story adds such a beautiful layer of intentionality to your elopement. For us, it wasn’t just about finding a pretty backdrop, but returning to a place where your hearts already feel at home.
Freedom to Be Authentically You
One of the most beautiful gifts of eloping is the permission it gives you to show up exactly as you are, without performance or pretense. Here’s how the Alps created space for us to be completely ourselves on our wedding day.
Privacy for Vulnerability
As two very introverted people who don’t love being the center of attention, the Alps gave us the privacy we needed to openly share our hearts through our vows. I felt completely free to be vulnerable without a crowd watching and listening – something I know I would have held back from at a traditional wedding. Nobody saw the waterworks aside from Laura (who also cried) and Mathilde, and that intimate setting made our vows feel so much more meaningful.
Adventures in Wedding Attire
Being able to run around barefoot in my wedding dress in a field of wildflowers, and hike up to our picnic spot in my trail runners felt incredibly authentic to who we are as a couple. We rode up the gondola and even got to explore the ruins of a little chapel by a lake. These moments felt perfectly “us” in a way that a traditional venue never could have captured.
If you’re someone who loves adventure and the outdoors, why not let your wedding day reflect that? Your celebration should feel like the best possible version of a day you’d want to spend together.
The Sky Really Is the Limit
When you elope, especially somewhere as adventure-rich as the Alps, your wedding day possibilities become absolutely endless! The beauty of eloping is that you get to choose your own adventure level, whether that’s full-blown extreme sports or simply the adventure of saying your vows with your toes in the grass and mountains as your witnesses.
The stories Laura shared with us proved just how creative and bold couples can get with their celebrations. Some of her brides have gone paragliding after their ceremony, skiing in their wedding dresses, and even some even hike up to a rifugio to stay overnight before a sunrise ceremony at an alpine lake! While that last one sounded incredible, after flying 26 hours to get to Europe, Travel Buddy and I opted for something a bit more manageable but still adventurous for us.
Simplicity Creates Space for Joy
Here’s something I didn’t expect: stripping away all the traditional wedding complexity didn’t make our day feel “less than,” it made everything feel more meaningful and joyful. Let me explain how simplicity became our secret ingredient for the perfect wedding day.
Less Stress, More Presence
I’ve been a bridesmaid multiple times, and usually the prep time alone is hours of stress. Brides get hungry, tired, and overwhelmed sitting in hair and makeup for what feels like forever. In contrast, I literally rolled out of bed and went straight into hair and makeup – and I even got to drink a cappuccino and eat breakfast! Starting our day so calmly and well-rested set the perfect tone for everything that followed.
When you’re not worried about timelines, vendor coordination, or guest management, you can actually be present for your own wedding day – imagine that!
Fewer Variables, More Magic
When you think about large weddings with tons of details, there are simply more variables in the equation, and thus more things that could potentially go wrong. Our Alps elopement was beautifully straightforward: hair, makeup, photos, bouquet, dress, suit, gondola, picnic. That’s it! The entire planning process felt manageable rather than overwhelming.
Sometimes the most magical experiences come from focusing on what truly matters rather than trying to manage every possible detail.
Natural Beauty Eliminates Decoration Dilemmas
The natural beauty of Chamonix meant we didn’t need to spend money on elaborate decorations aside from my bouquet and Travel Buddy’s boutonniere. There were multiple moments when I looked around and thought “we don’t need anything else.”
One standout memory was at Planpraz in the wildflower meadows. Mont Blanc was glowing in the sunlight, the air was the perfect temperature, we had bluebird skies with little paragliders drifting down. I had never felt so free in my entire life.
When Mother Nature is your wedding decorator, you’re guaranteed a backdrop that no human designer could ever recreate, and it comes with the perfect lighting, too!
Your People Are Still With You
One of the biggest concerns people have about eloping is feeling like they’re leaving their loved ones out. But here’s what we discovered: there are so many beautiful ways to include your people in your elopement journey, both on the day itself and in the celebrations that follow.
Love Letters Replace Guest Lists
While I did miss having our family and friends physically present, they all wrote us heartfelt letters that we read on the morning of getting ready. These weren’t just congratulations – they shared happy memories, well wishes for our future, and their best marriage advice. What made me tear up the most was seeing the love our families were extending to each other: “Charlotte loves you so much, and now we love you too!” We’re creating a photo scrapbook and including all these letters as a permanent part of our wedding memories.
In some ways, those letters felt even more intimate and meaningful than traditional wedding speeches because our loved ones had time to really think about what they wanted to say to us.
Celebration Continues at Home
We’re planning two different after parties back home so we can celebrate with everyone without excluding anyone who can’t travel internationally. This way, no one feels left out, and we get to extend our wedding joy across multiple celebrations. Who says you only get one wedding celebration? Eloping gives you the freedom to have multiple parties and share your joy in whatever way feels right for your different communities!
Expert Guidance Makes All the Difference
Having several video calls with Mathilde to narrow down what kind of ceremony felt authentic to us was invaluable. With her experience in elopements, she thought of all the little details that Zane and I didn’t consider, helping us find the right balance of adventure that felt manageable rather than overwhelming.
Behind-the-Scenes Magic
I was so grateful to have Laura and Mathilde there creating the most loving, warm energy. Laura went above and beyond, helping to set up our picnic, assisting with my dress train, and capturing both formal portraits and candid behind-the-scenes moments.
Laura even got a video of me jumping up and down with excitement before our ceremony started, a moment I would have never thought to document but absolutely treasure now. The right vendors don’t just provide services, they become your cheerleaders, your problem-solvers, and sometimes even your tissues when happy tears start flowing!
Our Chamonix Elopement: Pure Joy
The day was so perfect that when it was over, I told Travel Buddy I wanted to elope again! I felt completely present and able to actually enjoy every moment, rather than being stressed about coordinating vendors, managing timelines, or worrying about guest logistics. If you had to sum up why the Alps made our elopement dreams possible in a way nowhere else could have, it was the perfect combination of our wonderful dream team of vendors, Chamonix’s accessibility to stunning natural beauty, and scenery that literally took our breath away. The mountains didn’t just provide a backdrop – they created space for us to be our most authentic selves and celebrate our love exactly as we’d always dreamed.
And that, dear readers, is why we believe elopements truly can be as wild as you dream them to be. Whether your version of wild is paragliding in a wedding dress or simply having the freedom to speak your vows without an audience, eloping gives you permission to celebrate your love story in whatever way feels most true to you. Trust me, you won’t miss the stress, but you’ll treasure the memories forever more.
