Last Updated on November 20, 2025 by Charlotte

Bamboo rafting in Thailand is one of those experiences that sounds almost too cool to be real: drifting down a jungle river on a handmade raft, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of nature. The good news? You can find bamboo rafting experiences all over Thailand, from Chiang Mai to Phuket. However, our bamboo rafting adventure took place near Khao Lak, in the Phang Nga province, and it was… let’s just say, unforgettable. This activity wasn’t something we planned in advance. In fact, it wasn’t even on our radar before we got to Thailand. But sometimes the best travel moments are the ones you say “yes” to on a whim. And this? This was one of those moments. So, here’s what happened during our bamboo rafting adventure, what to expect if you want to try it yourself, and how you can book your own bamboo rafting experience near Khao Lak.

Our Experience Bamboo Rafting in Khao Lak, Thailand

We thought we were just going to visit a sea turtle rescue center that day, but then our driver said, ‘Hey, I have a friend who does bamboo rafting. Wanna go?’ And obviously, we said yes, because our decision-making skills are flawless. We drove up into the mountains, past plantations of oil palm, and away from the city. Then, our driver pulled over at the side of the road and told us to hop in the back of a truck. This sounded like a great idea! The truck bounced along a back road that wove through a palm plantation, and we arrived at the river.

Before we knew it, we were gliding down the river on this handmade bamboo raft. Compared to the heat of Phuket, this stream was cool and shaded, like an oasis. As we cruised down the stream, we’d have to duck now and again to avoid hitting our heads on low-hanging branches of the trees.

But then, in the branches ahead of us, I saw a flash of black and yellow out of the corner of my eye. We bounced down a few little rapids, laughing, whooping, and the river curved again.

Do you know that feeling, that feeling like someone is watching you? That feeling that raises the hair on the back of your neck? It felt like that.

And then I realized… the trees had eyes.

There wasn’t just one snake curled up for a midday nap. They were everywhere! Black and yellow, scales and serpent.

We fell completely silent and we didn’t dare to move a muscle, as we quietly drifted under these snakes.

But then, I tried to re-adjust my weight, and the raft went CREAK!

“We frantically looked around, half expecting them to wake up all the snakes. To see snakes raining down from the trees!

And all I could think was, “how would I even explain to my mother that I got a snake bite because of my big butt?”
Thankfully, we made it past the snake kingdom, and then our guide asked if we wanted to go for a swim in the river. We were like—sir. We just made eye contact with some snakes. We’re good.

Toward the end of the journey, I got to try driving the raft. And honestly? I crushed it. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

So from sea turtles, to surprise bamboo rafting, to an accidental snake safari…it’s just another day, in paradise.

How to Go Bamboo Rafting Near Khao Lak

While our bamboo rafting adventure was spontaneous, thanks to a chatty driver and zero planning, you can absolutely experience something similar on your own (minus the “mystery pickup truck” vibes).

What to Expect

Most bamboo rafting experiences near Khao Lak take place on calm jungle rivers, usually within an hour’s drive of town. The journey is gentle, peaceful, and shaded, which is ideal for a slow float through nature. You’ll likely ride a traditional bamboo raft steered by a local guide, and you may get the chance to try paddling yourself toward the end.

The scenery varies by location, but expect:

  • Towering palms and overhanging jungle vines
  • Little rapids (nothing wild)
  • Wildlife sightings (birds, butterflies… and yes, probably snakes)
  • Optional stops to swim in the river

It’s a short excursion (usually 45–60 minutes on the water), so it pairs well with other activities in the area like the Sea Turtle Conservation Center, elephant sanctuaries, or waterfall hikes.

Worried about snakes? Most are non-venomous tree snakes just napping above the water. They’re part of the ecosystem, and they are not aggressive or interested in you. The guides know the area well and will steer you clear of any trouble. And honestly, the snakes were kind of cute!

Where Bamboo Rafting Tours Take Place

We don’t know the exact name of the river we visited (our guide literally dropped us off on the side of the road), but the most common bamboo rafting sites near Khao Lak are in the inland areas of Phang Nga province.

If you’re staying in Khao Lak or Phuket, look for tours that include transport, since the rafting spots are typically rural, and not all are marked on Google Maps.
