This 3-day itinerary hits the highlights of Val Gardena (Ortisei, Selva, or Santa Cristina), from jagged ridgelines to peaceful high-alpine meadows. Expect early mornings, scenic drives, and one unforgettable view after another. This is a fast-paced (and not exactly relaxing) trip, but it’s 100% worth it! Here’s how to make the most of 3 days in the Val Gardena region of the Dolomites.

Where Is Val Gardena?
Val Gardena is a stunning alpine valley in South Tyrol, nestled between the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites. It’s made up of three main towns: Ortisei, Selva, and Santa Cristina, all of which are excellent bases for exploring the region.
You’ll need a rental car to follow this itinerary as public transit is limited and slow, and driving gives you the flexibility to chase good weather and hit some remote viewpoints in only three days.
For tips on getting there, renting a car, and where to stay, see our Complete Dolomites Travel Guide.
Day 1: Arrive in Ortisei + Alpe di Siusi (Seiser Alm)
Pick up your rental car from Venice, Verona, or Innsbruck. All of these cities are within a 2–3 hour drive of Val Gardena. After checking into your hotel in Ortisei, Selva, or Santa Cristina, grab a quick bite in town and head straight up to Alpe di Siusi, the largest high alpine meadow in Europe.

The views from the top of the Alpe di Siusi are storybook-perfect. This high-alpine pasture has gentle rolling meadows all backed by the majestic peak of the Sassolungo. If you’re tired from the journey, you can just grab a spritz or coffee at a mountain hut and take it all in. But if you’re feeling energized, the flat, easy trails here at the Alpe di Siusi are ideal for a scenic walk. Plus, the golden light in late afternoons makes the meadows especially magical.
Weather tip: If it’s cloudy or stormy, skip the cable car to Alpe di Siusi. Settle into Ortisei or check out the local shops instead.
Day 1 Summary
- Morning: Pick up your rental car (Venice, Verona, or Innsbruck)
- Drive to Val Gardena (2–3 hours)
- Check into accommodation + grab lunch
- Afternoon: take the cable car to Alpe di Siusi
- Optional: flat walk across the meadows
- Or just: coffee at a mountain hut on Alpe di Siusi + soak in the view
- Evening: return to town, dinner, early bed
Day 2: Explore Seceda’s Epic Ridgeline
Today is the crown jewel of your three days in the Dolomites! Start early to catch first light on the famed Seceda ridgeline, which is one of the most photographed landscapes in the Dolomites. To get to Seceda, take the two-stage cable car from Ortisei and get ready to be blown away, both by the views, and the wind.

Right at the summit, you’ll get that famous shot: jagged limestone spires rising like a dragon’s spine from the grassy ridge. You can stick to the panoramic platform, take the short walk toward the cross, or go deeper with a longer loop to Rifugio Firenze. No matter which option you choose, you’ll be surrounded by sweeping alpine views the entire time.

Day 2 Summary
- Early start: Take the Ortisei → Furnes → Seceda cable car
- Snap the iconic ridgeline photo
- Choose your adventure:
- Easy: flat walk to the Seceda cross (30–45 min RT)
- Medium: loop hike down to Rifugio Firenze
- Relaxing only: beer + speck platter at a rifugio
- Mid-Afternoon: Return to town mid-to-late afternoon
- Evening: Dinner + pack snacks for tomorrow
Day 3: Drive Scenic Passes + Val di Funes Finale
Your last full day is about soaking up as many jaw-dropping views as you can. Sleep in a little, then hit the road through Passo Gardena and Sella Pass, two of the most scenic drives in the Alps.

There’s no pressure to hike today (unless you want to!), the driving is the experience. Pull over at viewpoints, step into a meadow, and enjoy how the landscape shifts from towering rock walls to lush valleys. Grab lunch at a mountain restaurant with a terrace, and maybe enjoy Canederli (bread dumplings) or a hearty goulash.

In the afternoon, backtrack and wind your way to Val di Funes, a quieter, less-touristed valley with the iconic view of St. Johann Church or St. Maddalena Church and the Odle peaks behind it. It’s about a 1hr to ~1hr30 min drive from Passo Gardena to Val di Funes. If you’re feeling up for walking, there are easy nature trails within the Puez-Odle Nature Park.
